If you’re considering training in project management, to support career progression or a career change, the Project Academy for Sellafield could be just the thing you’ve been looking for.
The academy has gone from strength-to-strength since it launched in 2016. You might have even spotted it in this weekend’s Sunday Telegraph supplement and on businessandindustry.co.uk. But what makes it the right choice for you?
#1 – The training has been delivered by experts in academia and industry
Magical things can happen when you work with people who have a shared ambition. The academy is an amazing example of that.
When we came up with the idea for the academy it was always our intention to work with others in developing and delivering the training. The University of Cumbria deliver the training that is developed in collaboration with industry.
Don’t believe us? How about this for a team effort… later this year the university will become the first site to offer a degree level 6 Apprenticeship. That course was developed with us and other leading employers, including BAE Systems, British Airways, Rolls-Royce and the BBC.
#2 – We know that project management can be a career choice or a career change

Nadine Lofthouse, one of our planning engineers, changed roles last year and wanted to upskill. She said: “I was working as a package planner within waste management and moved into a new role as a planning engineer in the nuclear materials area of the business. I had minimal background knowledge of projects and the way they work. I looked to the project academy to see if there were any available courses to help me build up my project knowledge and support me in my new role.”
#3 – You can do everything from a one day course to a PhD

#4 – You can train alongside people who don’t work in nuclear
Project management is the same in the nuclear industry as any other. Whether you work on the construction of an airport, a rail network or a football stadium, the fundamentals are universally the same. So the academy isn’t just training our next generation of project professionals, it is offering accredited training programmes for project managers across the area and across industries.
Lori Cockburn from MAP Group UK Ltd completed her training with the academy. She said: “It’s good to have a mixture of different sectors and experience within the group when you are training. We all learned from each other and ideas were always being bounced around.
